Vrboska Karnevol – all dressed up!

Karnevol is a big event in our winter calendar.Each year Jure Karnevol is put on trial for all his crimes – basically, everything that has gone wrong over the past year. This year’s hot topic is obviously the spread of the Corona virus, and we must all feel much safer with the burning of Jure. Lots of Vrboskans turned out in style, with some rather inventive costumes – and that’s not just the kids!

In search of Hvar’s wild orchids

We’ve been enjoying the springtime sight of Hvar’s wild flowers for many years now. I’ve taken lots of photos, diligently looked up their names and created flower guides to keep track of what we’ve learned. But until quite recently, I’d not seen any wild orchids on our wanderings. They are quite seasonal, so you have to be on the lookout in April and May, and know what you’re looking for. So the first few orchids had to be pointed out to me, after which I got the idea, and started to look more carefully. It’s amazing how many of these delicate flowers are there among the greenery, just waiting to be seen!

Hvar historical theatre opening week celebrations 1-3 May 2019

The historical Hvar theatre reopened its doors this week, looking quite exquisite after extensive renovations. Over three nights, there were celebratory performances, including poetry, music and plays. The Croatian Minister of Culture came for the official opening, shown live on Croatian national TV.
