Eyes the colour of lavender

There are a couple of songs that take me right back to Hvar. This is one of them – Oči boje lavande – a lovely song we first heard at the Hvar Wine festival, and many times since. The locals all know the chorus and will sing and sway along, and if you’re going anywhere on the Croation coast you’ll likely hear it. This is your chance to learn the words and get into the mood…

This version by Klapa Bonaca – Enjoy!

Oči boje lavande

Kažu da ljubiš nekog boema,
skitnicu neku, da druga si žena,
a ja sam skoro lud od tvoga otrova,
i molim se pred ikonom svetom, ljubavi moja

JA POŽELIM NOĆAS OČI BOJE LAVANDE,
I BISERE NJENE ŠTO IH USNAMA SKRIVA,
VRATI MI BOŽE OČI BOJE LAVANDE,
JER SUTRA ĆE KIŠE ISPRATI SVE, ISPRATI SVE

Mjeseca srebro, i sunca sjaj,
Tuga i bol ne idu u raj,
Sanjao sam kako letiš u krilu anđela,
Sad je i Bog na tvojoj strani, ljubavi moja

JA POŽELIM NOĆAS OČI BOJE LAVANDE,
I BISERE NJENE ŠTO IH USNAMA SKRIVA,
VRATI MI BOŽE OČI BOJE LAVANDE,
JER SUTRA ĆE KIŠE ISPRATI SVE, ISPRATI SVE

Here’s the translation:

They say you love some bohemian,
Some tramp, that you’re a different woman,
I’m driven crazy by your poison
and pray before the Almighty, my love

I want tonight, eyes the colour of lavender,
Her pearls protected by those lips,
Oh God, return to me, eyes the colour of lavender,
Because tomorrow rain will wash all away, wash all away

Silver moon and sun shine
Sorrow and pain don’t go to heaven,
I dreamed you flew on the wings of an angel,
Now even God is on your side, my love

I want tonight, eyes the colour of lavender,
Her pearls protected by those lips,
Oh God, return to me, eyes the colour of lavender,
Because tomorrow rain will wash all away, wash all away

And here’s a timely post by Paul Bradbury in the Digital Journal about a Rotary event in the Hvar Arsenal, with the wonderful Klapa Bagulin performing this very song.
