Happy New Year to one and all! We celebrated the arrival of 2018 in Stari Grad, a place that has seen the passing of more years than most other cities. The main party was set up in Tvrdalj square with live music by Aurora, and fireworks at midnight. The square was looking very pretty and festive as we passed by early in the evening.
We were headed for Bistro kod Damira, one of Stari Grad’s best restaurants, for a special New Year dinner with live jazz music by Algo Bueno (Jelena and Tomo). I really wasn’t sure how Damir was going to fit everyone into what is, at the best of times, quite a snug dining room. Add a piano and viola duet, and I thought for sure we’d be overflowing on to the outdoor terrace!
As it was, most of us chose to take a wander outside between courses, but that was just because it was a lovely evening out there, amazingly warm after a chilly couple of days. Our dinner was wonderful, the courses kept coming and the wine flowed! I especially appreciated that my veggie option was presented with as much care as the meaty version, despite very late notice. Very fresh and tasty!
Jelena and Tomo played us a lively selection of jazzy favourites throughout the evening, a perfect accompaniment to our dinner. I hadn’t heard of Algo Bueno before, but I shall definitely look out for them again! Towards the end of the night, Jelena treated us to a couple of songs (Sounded Hungarian, or possibly Romany?) – and what a beautful voice she has! I’d have loved to hear her sing more!
As midnight rang, we toasted each other with glasses of bubbly, and went outside to enjoy the main foreworks, along with our own sparklers! A fine way to round off the old year, and bring in the new. Many thanks to Damir and his staff, and to Jelena and Tomo for a wonderful evening.
